It is the day of her twelfth birthday and young April suddenly begins to experience the appearance of bloodstains on her body, during a family meal. She is frightened and confused, and in an attempt to cleanse and hide her own blood, her secret will inevitably flood her whole world. Only after reaching a moment of calm will she be able to change her critical gaze towards her own body, and begin to accept the nature within herself.
“Abril” is a short film that through magical realism aims to make a visual metaphor of the first menstrual period. It is a critical portrait on the fear of ignorance, on how disinformation can transform an experience.
